De Magnolia kobus, ook wel bekend als de Noordelijke Japanse magnolia heeft een opgaande, piramidale kroon die later breder eirond wordt. De boom kan een hoogte bereiken van 8 tot 15 meter. De bladeren zijn eivormig en groen van kleur. In de maanden maart en april, voordat de bladeren verschijnen, opent de Magnolia kobus zijn grote, witte bloemen. De bloemen hebben een aangename geur. Na de bloei verschijnen rode zaadkokers. De Magnolia kobus gedijt op alle bodems maar niet op kalkrijke bodems. Daarnaast heeft hij de voorkeur voor een zonnige tot halfschaduwrijke standplaats. Vanwege de relatief trage groei is snoei meestal niet nodig. Indien snoei gewenst is, kan dit het beste direct na de bloei gebeuren om de vorm van de boom te behouden en schade aan de bloeiwijze in het volgende seizoen te voorkomen.

The width of this item is such that it CANNOT be attached to the wall studs. That is unsafe for something that is intended to hold heavy items like liquor bottles.
